Portraits (2016)

I created a performance piece, a song-cycle accompanied by large scale projected portraits, that springs directly from my love of storytelling and my passion for history. The purpose of this project is to turn our gaze away from imposed beauty standards and instead see women as powerful thinkers and doers.

The accompanying album, "Portraits" features my original songs from the project and the CD includes thumbnails of the portraits that were created by Liz Downing.

She is the co-host of "Why Aren't You Famous?" podcast with fellow independent working musician, Andrew Grimm. ellen was an Artist-in-Residence at the Strathmore (2012) and The Studios of Key West (2014).  She co-produced Mobtown Moon, a re-imagining of “Dark Side of the Moon” (2013) that featured over 50 musicians from Baltimore, with musician Sandy Asirvatham. In 2010, she wrote, recorded and performed a song for an Emmy nominated TV campaign and also composed the score for a shadow puppet piece entitled “Alonzo’s Lullaby”, which has been awarded the prestigious UNIMA Citation of Excellence that jump-started years of collaborative work with puppeteers.
